General
This scenario was created to test the Billy Yank rules (version 5.0). The two sides represent different force structures but the same number of points. The questions to be answered is; "Does the Unit Point System provide reasonable sides for a scenario?"
The Confederate force consists of a single large division. It contains good troops. All of the infantry is Average or Elite quality with Good or High morale. They are armed with first line rifle-muskets. The artillery is adequate, although typically inferior to Union units. There is no cavalry. Brigade commanders and the division commander are all well experienced with good benefits.
The Union force consists of two small divisions organized into a corps which also has a corps artillery battery and supply column. The Union infantry is mostly Green and Militia quality with Poor or Bad morale. Most of the units are armed with first line rifle-muskets, although some have good quality smoothbore muskets. The artillery is good, with fine morale and generally excellent quality. There is no cavalry. Brigade commanders, division commanders, and the corps commander are barely adequate. Most are inexperienced and have only low benefits.
The Battlefield
The scenario may be played on an 4x8 or 8x8 area. If a 4x8 area is used, the forces engage from the long ends of the battlefield.
The battlefield should be laid out as a basically flat plain. Two roads form a "+" with the crossroads at the center of the battlefield. The town of Smegg is located at the crossroads. It consists of a few buildings plus to the northeast and southwest of the town are two sets of wooden fences enclosing farmyards. A small hill should be located roughly in the center of each quarter of the battlefield. On a 4x8 table, the hills will butt against the edge of the board. On an 8x8 table, two small streams should parallel the north-south sides about 1-1/2 feet in from the edges of the table. A few woods should be placed randomly around the board, with equal numbers on the north and the south sides of the battlefield.
All otherwise unspecified ground is Open. All woods are Restricted/0 (Light). The streams (if used) are treated as Rough, except where crossed by the roads at fords, which are Open.
Objective
Both sides seek to take Smegg's Crossroads and hold it. Holding the crossroads shall mean that no enemy troops are within 12 inches of the center of the crossroads.
