Background
Harpo was born in the land of the Bulgars near the city of Pest in 1175 AD. He was a simple peasant child destined to be a peasant farmer. At the age of 15 he ran away with two older boys to join a band of mercenaries. For three years his band was part of various armies, but saw little actual fighting. In 1195 the band was part of a small army raised by Venice against the baron of Treviso. During this short campaign he met Victor Silvestrius. They became close friends. When the army was disbanded, Harpo decided to go to Venice with Victor.
In Venice Harpo worked with Victor as a part time body guard and general laborer. They lived with Victor's sister's brother-in-law, Aleardo Belmondo, a blacksmith. When, in 1197, Gaetano Magni asked Aleardo to go on a quest with him, Harpo and Victor also agreed to be part of the little band.
Description
Harpo is of average build and has boyish good looks. He is a happy, cheerful person, often to the point that people would like to smash his face in. Harpo has a winning way with most people. He is also known for his sense of humor which typically expresses itself in the form of practical jokes, especially against officious and overly pompous persons. Those who do not know him often see this as silliness and simple-mindedness. Also, Harpo is not particularly bright. Compounding his low native intelligence is his lack of an attention span.
As a fighter, Harpo is mediocre. He tries, and he is better than the average peasant, but he is not up to the standards of professional warriors. Harpo's one special ability is his music. When he plays his lyre, people tend to stop what they are doing just to listen. Some have been known to fall into reveries.
