Amilcare Magni
Companion and brother of Gaetano Magni

Background

Amilcare Mangi is the fraternal twin of Gaetano Magni of House Verditius. They were born in 1175 AD to a freeman day laborer in the city of Naples. At the age of seven (1182 AD), he and Gaetano were both taken as apprentices of Aurilius Dragonstaff of House Verditius at the Covenant of Verdi near Naples. Amilcare trained as a Verditius apprentice for four years. During this time Aurilius became aware that Amilcare's Gift was probably not adequately developed to allow him to effectively perform Hermetic magic.

Amilcare was severely injured at the age of eleven (1186 AD). Aurilius had him assist in the preparation of a powerful potion. Either the magic of the potion was too powerful for Amilcare's abilities, or he was just clumsy; but the result was the potion ended up on his face and upper body. Amilcare received severe scars on his face and lost the use of his left eye. After the accident Aurilius decided that Amilcare could no longer continue as an apprentice. Knowing the brothers' devotion to each other, Aurilius allowed Amilcare to remain at the covenant and to continue studying. For the next eleven years Amilcare furthered his education in languages and scholarly matters.

With the completion of Gaetano's training as a magus, he decided to leave Verdi to follow a dream he experienced. There was no question but that Amilcare would go with him. Therefore in the Spring of 1197 AD they set off to Venice to follow Gaetano's dream.

Amilcare's personal loyalty is to his brother Gaetano. He feels an obligation to Gaetano for his having argued to keep Amilcare at the covenant. He knows his life would have been much harder had this not happened.

Description

Physically, Amilcare is a good sized person. His overall build could be described as husky, although not out of the ordinary. Most notable are the scars which cover his face and parts of his left side, and the missing left eye. He normally wears the rough clothes of a common working person, and often keeps a hood over his head to hide his scars.

Amilcare is not a generally pleasant person for people to be around. His missing eye and badly scarred face along with a general air of unease cause most people to shy away from him. In response to this, he has become rather reclusive. He prefers to be alone, with his brother, or with the immediate group of companions whom he knows, but no one else. He is also notably insensitive to the problems of others; which is not surprising after the way he has been treated due to his physical problems.

Despite his physical problems, Amilcare is quite intelligent and has a broad education. He has studied the Liberal Arts and their associated disciplines. He has also learned a number of languages, although he uses these mostly with his brother. From reading, he has gained a general knowledge of the Order of Hermes, the Church, the occult, and heroic legends. He also developed a modest knowledge of herbalism which is often used in conjunction with his skill at alchemy.

Amilcare's combatant skills are limited. He has some ability in brawling and fighting with a quarterstaff, but he would always prefer to avoid a fight or try to talk his way out of the problem. Amilcare also has a modest ability to work wood, especially the forming of everyday items on which he often adds fine details and carvings. He has also practiced the forging of legal documents (this was one of the ways he helped at the covenant of Verdi).

Amilcare was born with a form of the Gift. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an imperfect version (from a Hermetic magic point of view) and Amilcare was not able to complete his apprenticeship. His Gift did however manifest itself as a series of sensitivities. Amilcare is able to feel when things are magical, holy, or unholy. He is also able to see spirits and some other invisible beings. While Gaetano knows of his abilities and his companions have some awareness of his sensitivities, Amilcare generally keeps his abilities to himself.
