Covenants Information

The campaign uses some of the published information in the Lion of the North and the Heirs to Merlin source books regarding the existence and locations of other covenants.

The starting dates of some covenants, especially those within the Loch Leglean Tribunal, have been moved back to allow them to be present in the campaign. The locations of some game background covenants have been moved. Also, some new covenant locations within the Tribunal have been defined, however no other information has been specified.

Covenant Information

Loch Leglean Tribunal

Unless otherwise noted, the information about covenants in the Lion of the North book shall apply.

Covenant   Description
Blackwater   This covenant is located within a cave system on a small rock island within Blackwater Bay. The seven magi are reclusive, and rarely leave their island, relying on a few very loyal companions and grogs to provide for their needs. Other than one Redcap who visits the covenant every year or two, visitors are usually not welcome.
Crun Clach   See Lion of the North, page 94.
Dunvegan   This is another Ex Miscellanea covenant. It is located at, and dominates, the small village of Dunvegan, a fishing port. The covenant's consists of three connected buildings which could easily be mistaken for a modest priory. The six magi here have retreated from parts of central and southern Scotland. Their main interest is in training apprentices to follow in their traditions and keeping out of the way of the aggressive and unpleasant magi of the rest of the Order of Hermes.
Horsingas   Generally similar to the description in Lion of the North (page 64), however the covenant was established not in 1073 AD, but in 889 AD. It continues the traditions of its Saxon founders, and now is becoming violently opposed to the expansion of the Norman influence in England.
Loch Laggan   This is the player covenant.
Mac Gruagach   See Lion of the North, page 86.
TBD   Nothing is currently known about these covenants. They may or may not exist. They may or may not even be Hermetic covenants. Whatever they are, the covenants are isolationistic, and consist of no more than three or four magi each. [Obviously, the covenant located on Loch Ness will, if it comes to exist, be names "Loch Ness". Also, it is highly likely that these covenants will primarily be composed of magi in House Ex Miscellanea.]

Stonehenge Tribunal

Unless otherwise noted, the information about covenants in the Heirs to Merlin book shall apply.

Covenant   Description
Blackthorn   See Heirs to Merlin, page 118. The magi of Blackthorn recently (1062) drove their off-shoot covenant, Tagelyn, from that covenant's cave system, and occupied those caves. Battles with Tagelyn and Norman invaders have left Blackthorn weakened, but still aggressive.
Cad Gadu   See Heirs to Merlin, page 122. Although officially the Domus Magnus of House Ex Miscellanea, the covenant is of little importance. It was burned by Gruffyd ap Llewelyn in 1060, and is still trying to recover.
Edenholm   This covenant was founded in 1015 by four magi looking for a relatively isolated place to study magic. The magi live in and their companions run the small copper mining town of Edenton. To protect their secret, the exact location of the covenant is known only to the members and two Redcaps. Visitors are not welcome except by specific invitation, which is very rare.
Londinium   See Heirs to Merlin, page 13-14. This covenant is no longer quite as secretive as indicated. The ten magi live in separate houses in various parts of the city. Each appears to be a merchant, and the covenant has companions who are actual textile and wool merchants. Covenant meetings are regularly held at the home of the primus. As the members must live as part of the city community, they do not welcome visits by obviously magical members of the Order of Hermes.
Lux Draconis   An unremarkable covenant with only a few magi from various Houses. The magi are aging and appear to show no interest in continuing their lineage. If this keeps up, the covenant will probably fail within the next fifty years. The covenant itself is simply a collection of typical houses at the edge of a mountain village.
Mystic Halls   This covenant was founded in 1040 AD by seven young magi from the Covenant of Blackwater in Scotland (effectively stripping that covenant of its new magi). Physically the covenant has grown substantially over the years, aided mainly by having the primus also be the hereditary holder of the land. Problems are now developing between the covenant and the local nobility, as the covenant openly flaunts its strength. This covenant is also beginning to actively oppose the leadership of the Stonehenge Tribunal by the Covenant of Blackthorn.
Semitae   See Heirs to Merlin, page 122.
Stellasper   See Heirs to Merlin, page 15.
Ungulus   See Heirs to Merlin, page 130.

Hibernian Tribunal

Although a highly magical island, Ireland has only recently been penetrated in any numbers by the Order of Hermes. There are only three well established covenants, although it is thought that two or three more may be formed within the next few years.

Unless otherwise noted, the information about covenants in the Heirs to Merlin book shall apply.

Covenant   Description
Ashenrise   This covenant consists of the survivors from the Covenant of Tagelyn, who were driven from their caves by the magi of Blackthorn in 1062. The few magi and followers are hard pressed to stay alive at this point.
Caeflaron   A covenant founded early in the 11th Century by Hermetic magi from Scandinavia. It consists of five to eight magi. The number varies as members regularly move along the coast to the various Viking settlements, helping to expand the Viking influence.
Lombard   A covenant dominated by Tytalus and Flambeau magi. It is, by the standards of the isles, a large and powerful covenant with nine magi and a large force of grogs. The covenant is located in a modest sized town along a river with good access to the sea.
Vigil   A covenant of seven magi, primarily Ex Misellanea, situated on a hill overlooking a large lake. The covenant is closely connected to the local royalty, and regularly helps them in their various wars, especially with the Norsemen.
