Magical Items at the Covenant of the Mystic Halls

Introduction

This write up lists and describes the magical items at the Covenant of the Mystic Halls. Only those items owned or controlled by the covenant as a whole are listed. Magical items owned by the individual magi members are not included in this write up.

Covenant Support Magic Items

These magic items are used as part of the daily operation of the covenant.

Bell of Summoning

Appearance: A one foot tall plain bronze bell set in an ornate wooden stand which holds the bell about four feet above the floor.
Creator: Edward of House Verditius at the Covenant of the Mystic Halls.
Effects: Stroke of Summoning
Location: The Bell of Summoning is located in the Covenant's Great Hall.

Effect: Stroke of Summoning
Technique: Creo
Form: Imagonem
Level: 40
Range: Special
Duration: Momentary
Uses Per Day: Unlimited
Activation: Ringing the bell.
Penetration: 40+
Description: When set within an Aegis of the Hearth and rung, the bell may be heard clearly by anyone who is within the Aegis of the Hearth, and by anyone who participated in the creation of the Aegis of the Hearth who is within one mile of the bell.

Faerie Ball of Comfort

Appearance: This appears to be a golden ball, approximately eight inches in diameter, but not as heavy as if it were actually made of gold. It gives off a soft golden glow and is warm to the touch.
Location: The Faerie Ball of Comfort is located in the Covenant's Great Hall.
Effect: The ball creates or causes there to be light, warmth, and fresh air in an underground area. The ball effects all of the underground system in which the ball is located. A soft sunlight radiates from the ceilings; the air is a constant comfortable temperature; and fresh air circulates through the area. The lighting effect may be stopped by covering the ball with a cloth. The total area which the ball is able to affect is unknown, however, a similar ball in another faerie realm handled an area which was known to be a number of miles in diameter.
History: The ball was found in a faerie cave in southern Scotland in February of 1235 (refer to Austin Trelain's Case of the Bunch of Jerks Lost in Scotland). Its existence had been noted by the first primus (Rollo) in his book of journeys. A party was sent to find this item after the covenant moved into its underground quarters.
Notes: The ball is faerie magic. No one has attempted to find out how it works, and, because it is so necessary to the daily life of the covenant, the council has forbidden anyone to tamper with it.

Well Stones

Appearance: A large, flat, rounded edged river rock which was about one foot across, two feet long and about six inches thick. The rock has been split in half lengthwise.
Creator: Artemis of House Bonisagus at the Covenant of the Mystic Halls based on an idea by Austin Trelain of House Jerbiton.
Effects: Summoning the Waters
Location: There are two Well Stones at the Covenant. One is located at the bottom of each of the Covenant's wells. The corresponding halves of these stones are in the Ribble River near the covenant.

Effect: Summoning the Waters
Technique: Rego
Form: Aquam, Terram Requisite
Level: 40
Range: 5 miles (approximate, the exact limit has never been tested)
Duration: Permanent
Uses Per Day: 1
Activation: One half of the stone being placed in water
Penetration: N/A
Description: Half of each Well Stone is placed in a body of water. The other half is placed in a dry well. Water touching the broken face of one half of the stone is transported to the face of the other half of the stone.
The well will fill to a depth equal to the depth of water in which the other half of the stone is setting.
The range of the effect is at least five miles, although no test has been made to determine how much farther it will work.

Basket of Smothering Snows

Appearance: A small (six inch diameter, three inch deep) clay bowl. Four small metal circlets are spaced evenly around the upper rim and are used to suspend the basket from a ceiling.
Creator: Austin Trelain of House Jerbiton at the Covenant of the Mystic Halls. He created two Baskets in 1238 to fulfill his membership requirement for a significant contribution to the covenant.

Location: One Basket Of Smothering Snows is located in each of the covenant's library rooms.

Effect: Smothering Snow

Uses Per Day: 1 (Hey, if you have more fires than that in your library, you need some other form of serious help.)
Activation: The presence of a non-magical flame or fire larger than that of a candle or lamp within the range of the basket.
Penetration: N/A
Description: When hung from the ceiling in a room, should any non-magical fire larger than that of a candle or lamp occur within the basket's range, it will erupt in a smothering blanket of snow. The snow will cover all surfaces in seconds and accumulates for the duration of the effect. All common fires under the snow are extinguished. The snow will not melt or damage the surfaces it is on. Once the snow stops, candle or lamp fires may again be introduced into the room without causing a reaction. When the fall of snow stops, the snow will disappear over the next minute.
Note: The snow will have no effect upon magical fire (ex. Pilum of Flame). The snow will, however, effect any non-magical fires started as a result of magical fires (ex. a spell sets a book on fire, although created by magic, the fire in the book itself is not magical).
