Campaign History

The Mystic Halls Campaign is an ongoing campaign using the Ars Magica role playing game system. The campaign was started by Brent Fisher in 1987 in Fort Wayne, Indiana using the First Edition of the Ars Magica rules. At that time the campaign included Brent and three friends, whose names are no longer remembered.

In 1989 the Ars Magica Second Edition rules were adopted, and the author (David Ternes) joined the campaign. At this time scenarios were played every few months, with each scenario taking one to three gaming sessions. However, by 1991 only Brent and I were left in the campaign, the others having moved away.

The release of the Third Edition of the Ars Magica rules rekindled interest in the campaign. From 1993 to 1995 a number of new players joined the campaign, and we began running scenarios again on a fairly regular basis. Unfortunately, in 1996 Brent began to have medical problems which prevented him from running games. By mid 1997 the campaign was on hold. Since then, a few scenarios have been run by alternate game masters.

The campaign was reorganized in late 1998. Many of the existing problems and background anomalies were corrected. However, interest in the system and the campaign lagged. No games were played in 1999 or 2000.

In late 2000 a mini-campaign was grafted into the existing campaign. A group of new, young magi from the covenant went off on a traveling adventure. The mini-campaign lasted for just over a year and saw about a quarter of the total planned adventures completed.

At present the campaign is on indefinite hold.

Disclaimer

In the Mystic Halls Campaign, much of the background, naming methods, and other aspects of the campaign differ, often significantly, from the background and conventions given in the Ars Magica background materials. These discrepancies were introduced over years of play by the previous Campaign Master. Some have been reduced or eliminated in the campaign's reorganization, and some remain because they are necessary to maintain the overall flavor of the campaign. The current Campaign Master and many of the players are aware of the anomalies, and are working to clean things up, within reason.
